Filmmakers Information Center
Searching for New Contexts

Japanese non-commercial films and filmmakers today follow in the footsteps of a long and impressive history of independent filmmaking, but nevertheless must face various problems in screening, distribution, and public recognition.

Taking on the challenge, a new filmmakers’ coop called Filmmakers Information Center (FMIC) will be launched next spring by several young Japanese filmmakers. Collecting and compiling a database of films and filmmakers and assisting distribution will be the foci of the group’s activities.

In PART I, FMIC head Sueoka Ichiro meets with filmmakers and curators from Bangkok, to compare and contrast the Thai and Japanese state of non-commercial cinema.

In PART II, the importance of curation from a new point of view will be discussed and proposed, through two different screening programs representing the history of Japanese experimental film.

The FMIC
Filmmakers Information Center

The FMIC (Filmmakers Information Center) carried out its first public presentation in June this 2001. The FMIC plans to begin full-scale activity in the spring of 2002, and is now working together with filmmakers and critics as the FMIC Preparation Committee. The object in founding the FMIC was to offer information on filmmaking and activities involving artistic expression to filmmakers who work mainly in non-commercial filmmaking, and also to enrich film culture and support the protection and nurturing of filmmakers by providing critics, distributors and the general public with information about cinematic activities. Planned activities include the creation and publication of a database of filmmakers and their works, an internet information service (the publication of an online magazine), the publicizing of and cooperation with screenings and film festivals domestically and abroad, filmmaking workshops, lectures, a library and so forth. The actual launch is yet to come, but we will start from agendas that are easy to realize and proceed from there. For any inquiries, please contact Sueoka Ichiro at: wuemme@hotmail.com
