Support YIDFF!

The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival is funded by annual
membership fees, donations, and sponsorships from the public.

The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival (YIDFF) has been held biennially since 1989 as an international film festival focusing on documentary films. Over the past 19 editions, 3,805 films have been screened in total with a cumulative audience of 376,511 viewers (as of YIDFF 2025). Here at Yamagata, we are working together with audiences and local citizens to nurture this international film festival as a space where filmmakers and audiences can engage in sincere dialogue and where unforgettable encounters with film take place.

An independent nonprofit organization (NPO) was established in 2007 to take over the reins from Yamagata City which had served as organizer for nine editions. Ever since, we have strived to revitalize the community through film art and culture, in addition to hosting the film festival every other year. We conduct approximately 20 local screenings throughout the year, organize workshops for children, support research in academic fields, and archive films and accompanying materials related to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake.

These activities are made possible not only by subsidies from Yamagata City but also by the support of our NPO’s full and supporting members, donations, sponsoring companies, and funding organizations.

We sincerely appreciate the continued understanding and support of everyone who shares our vision.

Notes:
In October 2013, we became a Certified NPO, gaining greater social credibility as an organization. As a result, membership fees from supporting members and donations are now eligible for tax benefits for those who live within Japan.
