Seven-year-old granddaughter Man Man, entrusted with her grandmother Luo Luo’s camera, shows us around the house. At first glance, we’re presented with typical everyday scenes of toys and dolls, and of her great-grandfather and grandmother. The camera never leaves the home. And yet through Man Man’s eyes, even that small home sparkles like a treasure chest and seems full of life. The camera becomes the best toy of all. It is rare to see such a pure relationship between cinematographer and camera. She teaches us once again how to take pleasure in the world—and the infinite possibilities we had forgotten. (IST)
[Director’s Statement] Most of the footage for this film was shot by Man Man. As Man Man’s grandmother, it’s my heartfelt hope and wish that my fortunate experience of learning, this way of life alongside the teachers and fellows at Caochangdi Workstation, might influence Man Man, even just a little. That is my desire. However, this true image film shows that Luo Luo’s future does not belong to Man Man, but to Luo Luo herself as her own person.
Luo LuoIn April 2019, the director had the good fortune to encounter Caochangdi Workstation, marking a new beginning in both her life and creative journey. She completed her first documentary film, Luo Luo’s Fear, in 2020 (YIDFF 2021), followed by Luo Luo’s Youth in 2023 (YIDFF 2023). In the first half of 2025, she completed Luo Luo’s Dance.
