Serguei Loukianchikov

Belarussian director and screen writer born in 1945. Graduated VGIK in 1974. Since 1972 has made more than 80 documentaries working in both film and video. Between 1993 and 1996 he made a series of films on the Chernobyl disaster and its impact on the Belarussian people including Phantoms of Chernobyl (1995).

A youth looks out of a window at a railroad switching yard. All of a sudden, his visual world flutters to a fantasy place where film mingles with other images. Overcome with surprise, he is transported to a place of wonder. It is as if the incisive gaze of the director is striving to look beyond this century, marred by the misery of war, to the hopes offered by the next century. This film persists as one spot of light in an otherwise dark and turbulent time.
